Mind, body and weight loss the story of Glenn Hill’s methods

Heya tribe please have a look at a recent press release, talking about a new way to look at improving someones health & fitness..

By Jenny Needham

mind body and weight loss chester le street
Having caught the fitness bug in the army, Glenn Hill is now using his expertise as a personal trainer, employing unique mind and body techniques. Sarah Millington reports
IT may not sound like the best recommendation but Glenn Hill admits that the first time he talks to a client, they often end up in tears.

This, he quickly points out, is not his doing but the result of years of them trying, in vain, to lose weight. Meeting Glenn represents a turning point.
“Often they’ve failed so many times, they think it’s hopeless,” he says. “Unless you change that limiting belief, they’re always going to be in that cycle. Often people have been through all the diet clubs and they’re at their wits’ end.”
With clients like this, Glenn treads carefully, establishing a rapport and – crucially, trust – before subjecting them to the rigours of intense exercise. In fact, if someone doesn’t feel up to it, a session might not involve any real exertion at all.
“Every time a client comes in, I look at how they’re acting,” says Glenn. “If they’ve had a bad day, I won’t even take them in the gym – we’ll go and walk round the park. In the summer, I’ll get them to take their shoes off and we’ll walk on the grass. I’ll sneak some exercise in as we’re out there. Inevitably, the sessions become really hard at the end, but by then, their body and their brain are conditioned to it.”

Working freelance from Bannatyne’s health club in Chester-le-Street, Glenn sees all kinds of clients from those just wanting to tone up and lose weight to people with long-term health problems. As word of his success in tackling the latter spreads, he finds he is increasingly helping those facing a broad range of physical and psychological barriers.
Glenn’s approach is unconventional.

Having invested £5,000 in self-development courses, he draws on the latest techniques to harness the mind in helping the body to function effectively. “I can often fix a client without touching them or by tapping them on the head or the area that’s injured,” says Glenn. “That’s what the backbone of my personal training is – being able to help people using cutting-edge techniques.

“Some stuff I do is called Body Map, which is like an MOT for the nervous system. If someone has an issue with function, pain or flexibility, it’s often the brain that’s causing it. Once you make the brain feel a bit safer, that gives them back their function and often removes pain as well.”
The science may be complicated, but Glenn’s methods are simple. He performs tests, like getting a client to extend their arms to assess flexibility, and uses things like tapping and vigorous rubbing to spur the brain into action. As far as he knows, he is the only personal trainer in the region to take such an innovative approach.

“I do a something called Applied Movement Neurology and Neuro Linguistic Programming as well,” says Glenn. “It’s all based on modern science and some ancient science and it all works amazingly well together.”

His current role is a far cry from Glenn’s former career as an Army engineer. He joined up at 17 and spent 19 years as a soldier, throwing himself into any opportunity to learn new fitness skills.
“It wasn’t until I joined the Army that I realised I had a natural flair for health and fitness,” he says. “I competed at nearly every sport – hockey, football, rugby, kayaking, rock climbing – pretty much everything. I must have taken thousands of recruits on fitness and adventure training. I’m a very competitive chap so I tried to go on every single course I could. That’s what made me become a personal trainer and become one of the best – that competitive spirit.”

Having already decided to leave the Army, the move was prompted by Glenn being hit by a roadside bomb in Nad-e Ali, in Afghanistan’s notorious Helmand province, on New Year’s Day 2011. Escaping with minor injuries, he returned to his native North-East and set up the women’s gym Ladies At Leisure, in Chester-le-Street, where he now lives.
Despite its success, including nominations for Ladies’ Gym of the Year and Personal Trainer of the Year in the 2014 National Fitness Awards, he couldn’t make it viable, so was forced to close it. Since then, Glenn, 40, has been based at Bannatyne’s – though he hopes this will be temporary. “Next year I’ll start afresh,” he says. “Now I find it hard doing some of the hard fitness – I get injured all the time. I’d like to mentor other personal trainers so they can do what I do and have a venue somewhere else.”
Alongside his regular personal training, Glenn runs campaigns inviting those struggling with weight loss to contact him for free advice. He feels strongly that there is a need for more support in this area.

“I don’t think the Government does enough,” he says. “Giving someone money towards a diet class doesn’t work. It’s a short-term fix because they’re still left with the issue that caused them to overeat in the first place. I offer nutritional advice to everybody. For some I’ll give them a full nutrition plan. Every personal training client I have, I send to a dietician.”
Even when he is away, Glenn makes his presence felt, providing apps containing everything from videos of himself demonstrating exercises to tips on getting a good night’s sleep. “It’s like having a little Glenn on their shoulder,” he laughs.
An outdoor adventurer at heart, he dreams of one day relocating to the Alps, where he hopes to host retreats incorporating fitness, adventure, psychology and relaxation. Whatever happens, Glenn will continue with his two great passions – exercise and helping others.

WIN SESSIONS WORTH £1,000
Glenn is offering one reader the chance to receive 30 free personal training sessions, worth £1,000. To be considered, email Glenn at i.trainhard@yahoo.co.uk, explaining in no more than 500 words why you feel you would benefit from the sessions.
The closing date is Jan 2016.

Glenn’s top tips for a healthy New Year
1 Try to get at least ten minutes of fresh air a day.
2 Drink five glasses of water a day.
3 Try to have an extra hour in bed.
4 Eat food with the least number of ingredients possible.

5 Make time for yourself. Keep a diary and write down only positive things. At the end of the week, read all the good things you have done.

the rotten apple at the bottom of the barrel

This is about the rotten apple at the bottom of the barrel

So i am a firm believer of being genuine, honest, helpful and caring to my members and PT clients and they would all vouch for me on this statement.  I also dont like to hate as it has a negative effect on me and not them and therefore they have achieved their aim.

Recently some one used a social media review site to spout a load of malicious, hateful lies about me as a person and my gym.

Ofcourse no names here as it wouldn't be fair as she couldn't defend herself.  The hurtful thing here is that personally i have helped her in the past with financial asistance and other business related things again i cant say too much as you would know who i am talking about.

I explained my case on FB again not mentioning names etc for the best word to describe someone who would do this and the answers that came back were interesting... lots i couldn't put on here but here is some:

  • Bitter
  • Pathetic
  • Bumder
  • Jealous
  • Small minded
  • Ignorant
  • Sad lives
  • Hateful
Must mention here that the people who left comments are my friends and clients etc who know me and have my interests at heart, however i agree one hundred percent.

You work VERY hard to be the best you can be for your family, colleagues, clients and members and then some insert your word___________ tries to ruin your reputation by slandering you on social media.

The beauty of this is though i have seen the response from the people that noticed it and it has made the person responsible look very sad and un-professional and done the opposite for me.

Please come to our open day to see all of our new services and stuff and win some goodies

improving the health of the North East and County Durham

Heya Tribe

"This is about dirty toilets"
improving the health of the North East and County Durham

I went to a business meeting today with health workers, charities and other fitness professionals keep reading.

I am trying to get involved in improving the health of Companies in the NE.

This meeting was all about saving the Health Service and Government time and money by improving the health of North East companies which will reduce health issues amongst us working types in the North East.

It's a great idea and healthier fitter people is my goal too but i had a look around and what i noticed told me a lot.  Lots of the health charities had a nice table with plenty of presentation materials but the fitness professionals in the room had an empty table with not a lot to catch the eye.  They also looked un energetic and not very fit...what an advert i thought.

I arrived early and chose the largest and best area.
This was my first time at one of these events and my table and area looked great myself and my other staff wearing fitness type uniform, with youtube promotional videos playing, music from my tabatas playing, a massage table ready to be used and loads of interesting stuff to look at and read.

You see i offer more than anybody else, i know this and my table in this business meeting needed to promote this fact.

This is the way i think: if i go into a restaraunt toilet and it is not immaculate i will not eat the food because i believe if the little things like toilet cleanliness are not looked after i dread to think how disgusting the food is.

The same at this meeting: If these exercise professionals/gyms cannot be bothered to put the effort into promoting their services and facilities i wonder how much effort they put into their clients and members.

No names but these other tables are huge national gyms and gov run fitness types and if they are not bothered preparing a few leaflets and exciting stuff on their table i dread to think what they are like with their clients and members.

Anyhoo thats my rant over and my advice to you is: if you would like to hire a Personal Trainer or need a fitness service look at everything including personal presentation.  If your PT is wearing a baseball hat and a body warmer while he/her is training you are they professional (dirty toilets).

If your company or business needs a little boost why don't you try our corporate packages.  We can run team building, confidence boosting, health improving bespoke packages to kickstart any work force.

How to get a six pack by eating the right food - Chester le Street

How to get a six pack by eating the right food

07983570574

How to get a six pack by eating the right foodEat regularly:  Eating healthy snacks regularly staves off hunger and stops you gorging on fatty meals.  You also stop your body’s natural tendency to store fat when it thinks there’s no food on the way.  Five meals is best, then if not four meals and so on.

Calories counting:  If you want to lose fat you have to burn off more calories through exercise and activity than you are consuming with food.  The average amount of calories a day we burn just to stay alive is between 1500-2500, this is your basal metabolic rate, the energy you use no matter what you’re doing, even when sleeping, than add any extra burnt off through exercise.  If you eat 500 calories less per day, you will lose around a pound of fat per week.  You can use a great app download called myfitnesspal which tells you the calories in food and helps track food and weight.

Protein:  Protein is vital for repairing muscles damaged by exercise and making them stronger again.  It also takes more energy to process than other foods, so it’s less likely to be turned into fat.  Aim to eat 1g of protein per kilo of body weight per day, 2g if you are doing some serious Bodybuilding.  Good sources include meat, fish, eggs and dairy.

Eat Leafy Greens:  when you exercise you put a lot of strain on your body’s immune system.  It can be kept in the best condition possible with the antioxidants found in leafy greens and dark coloured fruits and vegetables.

Drink Water:  Water is very important to keep you hydrated during exercise but it also helps to stave off those hunger pains and prevents the body hanging on to fat stores.

Eat the Right Fats:  Your body actually needs fat to function properly, around 30%.  Make sure you are getting the healthy kind such as those found in fish, olive oil, nuts and seeds.  Limit your intake of artery-clogging saturated fats found in red meat and trans fatty acids found in processed foods such as cakes and biscuits.

Drink Green Tea:  Green tea has been known to contain a whole host of health-giving properties.  One is the ability to help your body digest fat stores.

Avoid Alcohol:  Alcohol contain empty calories, which means the calories you consume with alcohol go straight into the body without providing any real nutritional or health benefit.  Your body has no method of storing alcohol instead it will try and remove the alcohol and during this time your fat burning process is turned off.

Avoid Ready Meals:  ‘Reduced Fat’ or ‘Low Fat’ this is what the label reads, this often means the product has very little fat but has a loads of sugar and salt instead to add flavor.  Sugar is the main reason why we get fat in the first place, it’s the sugar that gets turned to fat in the body that makes us fat and we all know the having to much salt in the diet is bad for us, which can raise your blood pressure, which puts you at increased risk of health problems such as heart disease and stroke.

So enjoy some extra help when it comes to losing weight or getting rthe body of your dreams.  Personal Trainer Glenn is the number one female weight loss expert in Newcastle and County Durham.

Personal Trainer Newcastle my food intolerances

Personal Trainer Newcastle my food intolerances

Heya my tribe-check this out, my life is over:

This is about my food intolerances and how i plan on making myself feel better and happier.

I am a Personal Trainer specialising in helping ladies above 30 years of age in the battle of getting and staying in great shape.  I eat pretty well during the week and normally have a blow out on the weekend.

I have recently became a food intolerance practioner(testing and advising on food intolerances).  As part of the course we get our intolerances tested for free.

Bugger

It turns out i have a high intolerance to cows milk, yeast, garlic and coriander.  Also i should limit lamb, maize, egg, chardonay, oat, walnut, peanut and soya bean.

The high intolerance can manifest itself in bloating,IBS,headaches, nausea, tiredness, lethargy, and stopping muscle gain or weight loss.

For me i think tiredness and lethargy, not good for a personal trainer and fitness lover.

My cows milk issue

I will replace milk with a almond milk, not a problem as i have tried it before and like it.  I generally love cheese, so i will need to stop eating cheese.  I often have whey protein(produced during milk/cheese production) after i train.  I will replace my whey protein with a vegan protein drink which you can get from "my protein".

Yeast issue

Yeast is a living fungus found in baked products and alcoholic drinks (especially beer, wine and cider).  So i will replace bread with flat bread or similar.  I will need to avoid beer which i love, funnily Champagne type wines are low in yeast....champagne it is then.

Garlic

I better avoid garlic, only on special occasions etc.

So these little changes will hopefully help me feel better, have more energy, sleep better and help me put some more muscle on.

TRIBE, I NEED YOUR HELP-PERSONAL TRAINER NEWCASTLE

Tribe, team, ladies

Ladies at leisure team(the only choice for female fitness) are running the Great North Run.  We are running this for a great local charity "St Cuthbert's Hospice"who provide terminal care for our local people.

Nearly everyone i talk to has been touched by the big C or St Cuthbert's Hospice in some way, the thing about the hospice is they have no government or NHS funding and are totally dependent on fundraising and the generosity of local people.

So to help the people of the North East they need the support from the people from the North East.

Please dig deep to keep St Cuthbert's doing the work they are so good at....  helping our friends and neighbours at their time of desperation and need.

Do you eat like a sumo - self jeopardising?

Do you eat like a sumo - self jeopardising?

Ladies you should read this, you see a lot of the ladies i talk to are jeopardising their health by eating at all the wrong times with the wrong food.
This is why breakfast is so important, read about how sumo wrestlers eat in order to hold as much as fat as possible.  Then look at the way you eat, is it the same as a sumo?

Sumo Wrestlers' Tricks for Getting Big

1.    Don’t eat breakfast.  Sumo wrestlers never eat breakfast.  This is a great way to slow your metabolism way down and will definitely ensure over eating later in the day.
2.    Exercise on an empty stomach.  Exercising without proper fueling, your metabolism will conserve every ounce of energy you have left to get you through the activity.  So you end up burning far less calories than you would have had you eaten prior to exercising.
3.    Eat only 1-2 meals each day.  Sumo wrestlers get up early, work out and then don’t eat until late in the day.  This way they will be starving and will eat anything they can grab and in enormous amounts.  This ensures a great calorie surplus and maximum weight gain.  When you eat a large amount of calories in one sitting, the body will use up what it can and then fill your extra energy reserves for later.  When your storage gets full, everything left over is stored directly as fat.
4.    Drink beer.  Sumo wrestlers drink large amounts of beer with their meals.   For a sumo wrestler, the bigger the belly the better!
5.   Eat out. Many studies have found that people eating in a restaurant will eat 40% more food and 30% more fat then they would if they were at home. Sumo wrestlers like to distract each other while eating to make sure they don't notice those "getting full" signals. They also always have someone else cook for them so they don't pay attention to fat or ingredients.
6.    Sleep after eating.  When they finish their large meals, the wrestlers will take a long nap.  Going to sleep on a full stomach forces the body to store most of the calories as fat because it doesn’t have the ability to metabolize large amounts of food while sleeping.
So, I bet a lot of this is sound really familiar!  I know they do to me…  Getting up early, skipping breakfast, running to the gym, eating a late (large) lunch and an even later (larger) dinner and then heading to bed…  This is the busy American life style that many people live.  When working as many hours as most do, it is easy to eat like a sumo wrestler!

What carbs for weight loss sunderland and washington 01913874222

What carbs for weight loss sunderland and washington 01913874222

Well i will try and shed some light with this blog.

Carbohydrates are our primary energy source and are essential for good health.
We need carbs and not all carbs are bad, you shouldn't have a really low calorie diet for any longer than the odd day.
I could confuse the life out of you here, but i wont, i will make it as simple as i can.
I am gonna talk about simple, complex, starchy and fibrous carbs.

Simple carbs

single sugar molecule, these are the ones that will give you an energy spike and a low, often leaving you tired and hungry for more simple carbs.  Fruit (fructose)are simple carbs and glucose naturally occuring in food.  This is why lots of fruit isn't great for weight loss. You often get high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) in fizzy drinks, squash and fruit juice. HFCS is absorbed so quickly and leads to poor food choices, over eating of the wrong food and drinks. Dairy is also a simple carb.

Complex carbs - starchy and fibrous
Most complex carbs contain fibre and provide energy without the highs and lows of simple carbs.  Complex carbs from natural sources are normally nutrient dense and therefore good for health.

Starchy carbs are calorie dense and are fully absorbed into the body, so everything you eat can be stored as fat.

Fibrous carbs are the best ones for weight loss and good health because fibre is the indigestible part of the plant.  Therefore they have less calories per size of food and help with digestion.
An example: 350 grams of rice (starchy carb) contains more than 400 calories, while 312 grams of broccoli (fibrous carb) contains just 60 calories.  So doesn't it make sense to have a larger portion of fibrous carbs?
I will provide a list at the bottom of the blog on starchy - fibrous.
All of these fibrous carbs are great, however the carbs to try and avoid as much as possible are the refined carbs, anything that has been altered to make it taste better, look better, last longer etc.  These carbs are calorie dense but also very low to no nutritional value (fibre, viatmins and minerals)
refined grains and sugar products
white pasta, white bread, pretzels, crisps, biscuits, sugar, sweets, pastries, soft drinks and so on.   These are all high calories with no real nutritional value - SO JUST BAD BAD - avoid as much as you can.
However most of these have a whole grain, whole food un altered variant, check for them.

good fibrous carbs
broccoli
spinach
asparagus
cucumber
tomatoes
cauliflower
brussel sprouts
celery
onions
peppers
cabbage
mushrooms cale
aubergine
courgette
carrots
green beans
lettuce
Starchy
potatoes
butternut squash
cereal
bread
pasta
yams
oats
beans
rice
corn pumkin

Basically have a little more of the complex fibrous carbs as they are filling and nutrient packed and don't send your hormones up and down, making you feel like crap.  Also these complex carbs aren't a worry when it comes to diabetes.
A rule of thumb here for how much carbs in your food.
for fat loss roughly 40 - 45 % carbs with a good 35 - 40 % protein (meats-fish)

I am running a 25% discount on personal training until march the 1st, if any ladies would like to totally change your lives.

how many calories for weight loss, chester le street - 01913874222

how many calories do i need, i will tell you - 01913874222

A bit of maths calculations  here, not too many and pretty easy.

So to lose weight effectively there are a number of ways, i am a big fan of carb cycling at the moment. Works really well, however if you just take in 20% less calories than you need you should lose weight.

Make sure you eat properly though, no packaged processed rubbish, big protein meal for breakfast etc.
Got a calculation for you below, its dead simple.

655+(9.6 x weight in kg)+(1.8 x height in cm) - (4.7 x age in years) = BMR (how many calories to maintain)
an example a 65kg, 150cm 45 yr old female

655+(624)+(270)-(211.5)=1337.5 so BMR is 1337.5 calories

This would be to maintain, this doesn't take into consideration how much exercise you are doing or reducing calories .  So multiply BMR by activity below.

Activity
Sedentary, little or no exercise  BMR x 1.2
Lightly active                                 BMR x 1.375
Moderately 3-5 sessions            BMR x 1.55
Very active 6-7 sessions             BMR x 1.725
So 1337.5 x (1.55 moderate activity) = 2073.125 so roughly 2000 calories
2000 calories to maintain your weight, however to lose weight you should be in slight deficit, 20 % is a good reduction of calories.

Last calculation:
2073.125 x 0.20= 414.6, so you need to reduce calories by 400.
2073.125 - 414.6 = 1658.5 calories

Well it may seem hard, its not. I am as thick as a whale omelet and i can do this.
So a 45 year old, 65kg, 150cm lady needs to be taking in around 1658 calories per day to lose weight.
If it's too hard maybe i can help you out..
There are other calculations, however this one is simple and there is no body fat measuring involved.
